It is late June, it is 97 degrees in the South, and the internet has decided that Georgia's wide receiver depth chart is a national emergency. Credit — or blame — goes to Fox Sports' Joel Klatt, who appeared on The Next Round podcast this week and asked the single question that has Athens clutching its pearls: "Who is catching the football for Georgia?"
Klatt didn't say the Dawgs were bad. He ranked them No. 5 nationally. He said the SEC still goes through Athens. And then he twisted the knife. "I don't think you can win a national championship just dominating on defense," Klatt said. "There's going to be a moment when you have to make a play." He specifically pointed to the exodus of Zachariah Branch, Colbie Young, Noah Thomas and Dillon Bell to the NFL Draft as the reason Georgia's offense could hit a wall when it matters most. "I have a hunch," Klatt added, "that's gonna be the one thing that holds them back from winning a national championship."
The Georgia fan account response was, predictably, a multi-tab browser situation involving championship rings and Kirk Herbstreit quotes. Kirby Smart has two titles. He knows. The Dawgs know. Joel Klatt also knows, which is exactly why his take stings — it's not even a hot take, it's just a hot thermometer held up to a real problem.
Meanwhile, down in College Station, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed apparently decided that subtlety is for people who went 8-4. Reed went on record this week declaring that Texas A&M's goal for 2026 is to win the SEC and the national championship. Not make a bowl game. Not just beat Texas. The whole thing. Reed said it with his chest, the way a man says something right before either becoming a legend or a very popular meme. Mike Elko's seat stays cold for now, but Reed's expectations are writing checks the Aggies' schedule will cash or bounce spectacularly.
On the recruiting front, Tennessee won a three-team war with Ohio State and Michigan for a 2027 four-star safety on Friday — the kind of win that Vol Twitter treats like an actual game. Josh Heupel, who got whupped by Vanderbilt last season and whose best 2025 win was over a 5-7 Kentucky squad, needs these recruiting weekends to hit. If the Vols don't make the playoff in 2026, the goodwill bank account starts running dry, six years of good vibes or not.
And because Georgia fans needed something to cheer about after Klatt's drive-by, the Bulldogs received a nice Friday gift: four-star OT Kennedee Jones flipped his commitment from Florida to UGA, the latest in a long line of Gator recruiting departures that make you wonder if Jon Sumrall's first year in Gainesville is going to be measured in attrition more than wins. Florida is spending $1.45 billion to renovate The Swamp. They could maybe also spend some of that on keeping commitments, just a thought.
It's June 27th. Nothing counts yet. Everyone is a contender and every fanbase is delusional in the best possible way. Enjoy it while it lasts — because by October, at least four of these programs will be in full meltdown mode and we will all be here for it.
