Let's establish the timeline, because even by SEC standards this one requires a Powerpoint and possibly a therapist.

Lane Kiffin spent the offseason recruiting two players — tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris — who had signed NFL contracts this summer before getting cut and wanting to come back to college. A Louisiana judge said sure, fine, they can play. The SEC said absolutely not and threatened consequences so severe they included suspending Kiffin for half the season and fining LSU half its entire athletic budget. Then the SEC filed a federal lawsuit naming Kiffin, the LSU president, and the athletic director as defendants. Then LSU quietly did not put either player on the Clemson Week 1 roster.

And then — up 31-3 at halftime, his team absolutely obliterating Clemson in Death Valley — Kiffin turned back to the ESPN sideline mic and said, "Imagine if we had pro players."

Chris Fowler's response on-air: "Uh. He threw that in at the end. 'Imagine if we had pro players.' Couldn't resist."

Correct. He could not resist. He never resists. That is the entire Lane Kiffin experience distilled into five words delivered to a national audience while his lawyers were presumably on the phone screaming.

The SEC's response? They put the quote in the amended federal complaint as evidence of "lack of institutional control." A halftime joke. Entered into federal court documents. We are governed by chaos and I respect it.

From there, the conference scheduled a Thursday vote — today's Thursday, this very Thursday — to formally consider expelling LSU from the SEC. A founding member. Since 1933. Paul Finebaum called Kiffin "a 51-year-old man behaving like a 16-year-old." Stephen A. Smith went on First Take and told the SEC to "sit your ass down." The Louisiana Attorney General called the SEC's lawsuit "legal garbage" and got added as a defendant for her trouble.

Then, Wednesday night, LSU president Wade Rousse sent Greg Sankey a letter. LSU had filled its two open roster spots with two other players. The roster was locked. The issue was, quote, "moot." The expulsion vote quietly disappeared from Thursday's agenda. The federal hearing got postponed. Everyone went home.

So: LSU blinked. But Kiffin still got a 51-10 win over Clemson, the #8 ranking in the AP Poll, a book dropping next week literally titled Lane Being Lane, and a halftime quote that will live forever in SEC legal history. The SEC got... the right to keep holding a vote they chose not to hold.
