Happy July, everyone. The season is still two months away and the SEC has already generated enough bulletin board material to wallpaper Kyle Field. Welcome to the offseason we deserve.

Let's start where all good chaos starts: Lane Kiffin, a man constitutionally incapable of staying out of trouble for 72 consecutive hours. In a four-hour Vanity Fair interview — because apparently Lane needed four full hours — Kiffin explained that recruiting to Ole Miss was harder because parents told him Oxford felt like it lacked diversity. "That doesn't come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana," he said. He clarified the next day that it wasn't "calculated." Sure, Lane. Four-hour interview, perfectly incendiary quote, but not calculated. Totally.

Then Steve Sarkisian, apparently deciding he wanted some of that sweet hot-take energy, told USA Today that "all you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree." He later called it a "poor choice of words" and said he could have used macroeconomics instead. He was not punished. Ole Miss was not amused. Stephen A. Smith devoted three full minutes of First Take to calling it "classless" and "below the belt," while also pointing out that Ole Miss made the College Football Playoff and Texas did not. The irony of Sarkisian roasting Ole Miss academics while coaching Arch Manning — whose grandfather and uncle are Ole Miss legends — is so thick you could serve it at an SEC tailgate.

Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss's actual quarterback and the man Kiffin recruited to Oxford, pushed back publicly on his former coach's diversity framing. ESPN's Ryan McGee called it the line Kiffin could never walk back. "Do you really want to make this personal?" was essentially the message from Oxford. Lane Kiffin making things personal is, of course, his entire brand, so: yes, he absolutely does.

Meanwhile, the man who replaced Kiffin in Oxford, Pete Golding, is just quietly stacking recruits and cashing checks while two other coaches fight over who insulted his school worse. That's actually kind of impressive.

Elsewhere in the conference, Texas A&M entered July holding the unanimous No. 1 recruiting class in the country with 25 commits, including five five-stars, and the Aggie internet is doing what Aggie internet does — already planning the national championship parade for a team that hasn't played a down. Mike Elko has genuinely turned the recruiting corner at College Station, and the rest of the SEC is quietly furious about it.

Kiffin's LSU, fresh off the drama, is also recruiting like a man who needs wins now. The Tigers loaded up June with 10 commitments, rocketing from No. 50 to No. 18 nationally in the 2027 cycle, and had multiple prospects scheduled to announce on July 1 live on Rivals' YouTube channel. Whatever you think of Kiffin the person, Kiffin the recruiter is annoyingly effective.

The SEC also dropped its 2026 broadcast time windows this week — EARLY, AFTER, NIGHT, or the passive-aggressive FLEX — and fans are already arguing about who got the 11 a.m. slot as punishment. Some things are eternal.

SEC Media Days are still three weeks away. At this rate, Kiffin will have called three more press conferences and Sarkisian will have apologized for a new thing entirely. Sleep well.
