SEC Media Days are six days away in Tampa — first time the conference has hauled its annual traveling circus to Florida — and the conference has already produced enough content to fill a full fall of hot takes. Coaches haven't even sat behind the podium yet and we're already in the middle of a multi-front war involving fake academic shade, a recruiting heist in progress, and Alabama sitting last in the SEC's 2027 recruiting rankings. So, business as usual.
Let's start with the beef, because there's so much of it and it pairs beautifully with summer. Back in May, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian told USA Today that transfer players at Ole Miss just need to "take basket weaving" to earn a degree — a comment so spectacularly unnecessary that even Stephen A. Smith, a man professionally allergic to nuance, called it "low" and "a classless thing to say." Sarkisian walked it back at the SEC spring meetings, explaining he "could have used macroeconomics" or "engineering" as the example class. Brother. If you're explaining the hypothetical course you should have named, you've already lost. The non-apology apology tour continued, the SEC declined to punish him, and Ole Miss fans have been furious ever since — which, at least, gives them something to do besides explain why their College Football Playoff run didn't count or whatever.
But here's where it gets delicious: Lane Kiffin, who left Ole Miss for LSU and then decided to drop his own bombshell in a Vanity Fair profile about Oxford's "lack of diversity" making recruiting harder — yes, that Lane Kiffin — has apparently chosen violence as his primary communication strategy. Kiffin and the Tigers already flipped four-star safety Karnell "Greedy" James away from Texas, and now LSU is the heavy favorite to steal five-star wide receiver Easton Royal, the No. 1 wideout in the country, who was a Sarkisian commit. Royal literally posted Kiffin's media day photo on his social media, sending Tiger Twitter into full spontaneous combustion. The No. 1 overall player in the nation, Jalen Brewster, is also reportedly posting LSU gear "almost daily" while nominally committed to Texas Tech. Lane Kiffin's first seven months in Baton Rouge have been more chaotic than Brian Kelly's entire tenure, and he hasn't coached a single snap yet.
Meanwhile, Alabama — Alabama — is currently ranked dead last in the SEC in 2027 recruiting by Rivals. Kalen DeBoer's response is essentially "quality over quantity," and look, he's not wrong that they do this every summer, panic ensues, and Bama finishes top five anyway. But seven of the top ten in-state prospects are already committed, and not one of them is committed to the Crimson Tide. Auburn's Alex Golesh, in his first full recruiting cycle, has already hoovered up two of the state's top ten players while Tuscaloosa waves from the sideline. There are Vanderbilt fans who feel better about their class right now. Let that sink in.
Thursday, July 23, Sarkisian and Kiffin are scheduled to appear at the same Media Days in Tampa. One of them insulted the other's former school. The other is actively stealing the first one's recruits in real time. Someone is going to ask them both about Easton Royal and it is going to be absolutely unhinged. Set your alarms. Bring snacks. The SEC doesn't do offseasons.
