Nobody told Ole Miss that the offseason was supposed to be quiet.

It started, as most SEC disasters do, with Lane Kiffin talking too much. In a four-hour Vanity Fair profile published May 11, the freshly minted LSU head coach — who, lest we forget, bolted Oxford mid-season last fall for a seven-year, $91 million deal in Baton Rouge — decided the glossy magazine was the right venue to explain why recruiting Black players to Ole Miss had been so difficult. Specifically, he relayed that top recruits would tell him, "Hey coach, we really like you, but my grandparents aren't letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi," citing the school's fraught history with Confederate imagery. He then helpfully added that LSU parents had been raving about campus diversity, telling him: "It feels like there's no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that's the real world."

Kiffin later apologized — sort of. "I really apologize if anybody at Ole Miss or in Mississippi was offended by that," he told On3, a sentence so carefully lawyered it makes the average political non-apology look like a full confession. He also noted, with the confidence of a man who knows exactly what he's doing, that "there are some things that I'm saying that are factual, they're not shots." Sure, Lane. Not shots.

Then, because one SEC coach torching Ole Miss in a given week is never enough, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian stepped up to the loom. One day after Kiffin's comments went viral, Sark told USA Today that while Texas strictly accepts only 50 percent of a transfer player's academic credit hours, "at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree."

Stephen A. Smith, defending the honor of a program he has never once cared about before this moment, devoted a full three minutes on First Take to calling Sarkisian's comments "classless," "totally wrong," and "a low damn blow." He also noted, correctly, that Ole Miss made the College Football Playoff last year while Texas did not — which is the kind of factual checkmate that makes Sarkisian's whole bit land significantly worse.

First-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall, a former Ole Miss assistant who apparently has no interest in building bridges, posted on X: "Grateful to coach at a top 10 public university that also offers advanced basket weaving!" Sumrall dunking on Sarkisian by dunking on his former employer is the kind of multi-target chaos that gets you a longer contract in this conference.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss athletic official Javon Patterson urged everyone to take a walk through the Velvet Ditch, Kermit Davis called Kiffin's remarks "pitiful," and Paul Finebaum declared that Kiffin is "trying to wipe Ole Miss off the face of the earth." For a program that just went to the Playoff, Ole Miss sure spent a lot of May being roasted by every living being with a press credential.

Elsewhere in the conference, Georgia's 2027 recruiting class has taken some lumps — five-star cornerback Donte Wright and four-star cornerback Jerry Outhouse both decommitted, leaving Kirby Smart's staff scrambling. Texas then swooped in and beat out Georgia AND Ohio State for a top 2027 tight end, because apparently everything is fine in Austin when Sark is not insulting neighboring schools.
